Anime Reviews: Darker than Black – Kuro no Keiyaksha

Darker Than Black

The process of me watching Darker than Black is an interesting one.  I attempted to watch the series a year ago; however, for some reason, I just wasn’t really liking it.  After about 6 episode, I dropped it, thinking that I’d eventually come back to it.  Last week, I picked up the series from where I left off, and finished it.

Darker than Black works in a very unique way.  There’s no standard “exposition” to the story.  From the very beginning the viewer is dropped right into the setting, so initially everything seems like a blur, and it’s hard to pick up the point of the series.  Initially I thought the show didn’t know what it wanted to be.  However,  you start to pick up on things with each succesive art and story.  These little things add up and by the end of episode 14, you’ve got a well developed  interesting cast of character, and the perfect set up for a great overarching plot to begin.

Sure enough, the plot really begins in the second half, and it’s a rush.  I’m not completely sure if I like how the sides were drawn so easily.  Making the ********* the big bad, was a little too straightforward for the series, but I guess it’ll make sense with the second season.

Really though, the biggest thing going for this series is the characters.  Hei makes one hell of a protagonist.  I mean yeah, he’s definetly conflicted, but he sure as hell isn’t wimpy.  He shows how a character can be kickass and emo at the same time.  Besides Hei, February also made an interesting “gray-area” character.  Early on he was made to look like a villain, but later on I started to see him as a second protagonist.  Misaki makes a great “normal observer” and I’m interested in seeing how she’ll come into play w/ the second season.

At this point, I’m pretty sure that I’ll blog the upcoming second season. I had a lot of stuff to say after each episode.  Here’s to hoping that it won’t dissapoint.

RATING: 8/10
