Manga Review : Uzumaki

Since it’s around O-bon I decided to blog something more horror-ish although O-bon atmosphere isn’t really horror at all. Oh well.
I have to admit that reading this at 3am was not a good idea if I wanted to sleep well afterwards. It was both unfortunate and neccessary for the sake of my peace of mind that it ends at 20 chapters. Created by the (in?)famous Ito Junji who is well known for his horror manga I have to say this was a very good horror series for anyone who wants scare, or at least, squick themselves a little. Please note, this has nothing to do with Naruto and I will have a most vio-*cough* annoyed reaction towards anyone who goes “HEY THIS ISN’T NARUTO! !$#$@#$”

Apparently these are delicious umbilical cords

Apparently these are delicious umbilical cords

In this manga there are students and people turning into snails, a hurricane falling in love(re: obsessed) with a girl, insane and highly intelligent demon babies whose umbilical cords become an addictive drug for anyone who ingests it and then being sown back into their mothers’ wombs just to name a few of the things that go on. If you’re wondering why these people don’t just leave, they can’t. The one tunnel that leads outside becomes endless and boats are sunk by whirlpools. For those who haven’t read this can you guess the pattern in these events? All I have to say is this manga was one nightmare fuel after another with alot of crazy people in a crazy town and you may not want to eat cinnamon buns or pofferts, or look at seashells, or think about the milky way galaxy, or ponder what may be underground after this. Not for people who cannot stand body horror but the realistic (to a certain point) art adds to the depth of the manga and combining the realistic art with unrealistic biology probably makes this scarier than it should have been. Many suspenseful and heartstopping moments and some romance thrown in although romance takes a backseat to the main horror of the stories.

nothing much to say..its one of the tamer episodes in Uzumaki

nothing much to say..it's one of the tamer stories in Uzumaki

A little disappointed in the ending since it still leaves some questions unanswered and the final chapter was more of a bonus story that takes place in the same place but unrelated to the main storyline. A grotesque and fascinating read not for the faint of heart. Especially in the later chapters.  Mangaka gets bonus points for originality and probably being one of the best in the horror genre. The only drawback I found was that the dialogue was sometimes dry and monotonous if you want the current arc to proceed for quickly. There is something very psychological in the way the stories are presented and in the art style which is also apparent in the next work. Coming up, another manga by Ito Junji : Gyo….oooo lookit! Shinies! *runs after FMA and Code:Breaker updates*

Happy Ending!....sorta...maybe...

Happy Ending!....sorta...maybe... at least they found their goal?

-Shiki (grossed out and looking forward to more horror once finished with reading other manga updates)
